Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter softened
  • 1.5 c brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 large egg
  • 1.5 c flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 c semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 c red & blue M&Ms*
  • 16 Red Velvet Oreos
  • Patriotic sprinkles
  • 5 tbsp Nutella or chocolate hazelnut spread

Instructions

  • Using a stand or a hand mixer, cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla.
  • Add egg and mix.
  • Add flour, ½ c at a time and mix.
  • Mix in baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Once batter is thoroughly mixed, fold in chocolate chips and then add the M&Ms and mix gently (you don’t want the M&Ms to crack too much as you stir them in).
  • Scoop half of the batter into a lightly greased square baking dish and press with your fingers or a spatula to evenly distribute the batter on the bottom of the dish.
  • Pour patriotic sprinkles onto a small plate.
  • Remove the tops of the Oreos and place the cream side of the Oreo into the sprinkles, replace the Oreo top, and begin lining the batter-lined baking dish with Oreos. Repeat until you’ve lined up 4 rows of 4 Oreos each.
  • Add the remaining brownie batter on top of the Oreos and spread evenly, again with your fingers or with a spatula, to cover the top.
  • Place dollops of Nutella on top of the brownie batter, lightly spread with a butter knife, and use the tip of the butter knife to swirl into the top of the brownie.
  • Place in oven and bake for 20-22 minutes.**
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

*You can use any kind of M&Ms you'd like. I used the regular M&Ms for this recipe, but you can easily use mini M&Ms. [br]**If you're planning to serve these the same day you bake them, bake them for 22 minutes. If you're planning to serve them the following day, bake them for 20 minutes. If you bake them for 20 and then serve them immediately, they're going to be very gooey (perhaps that's not a bad thing?!), but they'll firm up by the following day. You don't want to over bake these brownies, so if you want to play it safe, bake them for 20 and know you're going to get some nice, gooey brownies out of the oven!
