Y’all.
These signs are so easy and so cheap to make. Want some cute signs when you host your next get-together, bridal or baby shower, or to decorate your entryway table? Forget special chalkboard materials! Use items you probably already have at home to create these EASY faux chalkboard signs. You can use them to display a menu at your gathering, give people directions (i.e. “Sign the guestbook!”), or use as a festive decoration (see pictures below for some examples).
Put your helmets on. This is serious, mind-blowingly simple stuff.
That’s why I’m here, folks.
Here’s what you need:
- A frame (use one that you already own!)
- A piece of cardstock (any color – see a variation in photos below!)
- Scissors
- Piece of chalk
I used an 8 x 10″ frame for this tutorial, but you can obviously use whatever size you’d like/need for your occasion. Also, my frame has some cardboard in the back to fill a gap between the glass and the back of the frame, so you’ll notice that cardboard in these photos, but if yours doesn’t have/need cardboard, no worries – just make like a chalkboard and erase it from your mind.
I’m sorry.
You don’t have to write your message before you put it in the frame, but I definitely think it’s easier to do so!
Look how cute and how simple!
And, if you really want to blow your mind, check it out – you can do any color of cardstock you want depending on your occasion or celebration! Here’s one just for the 4th of July:
(Look how cute that calligraphy artwork is in the background! My sweet friend Catrina does GORGEOUS work. She made that beautiful print for my home office. She’s my soul-entrepreneur-sister and is skyrocketing her awesome business!)
Here are more examples of the DIY faux chalkboard signs I made for my daughter’s first birthday party a while back:
I used big black butcher paper for this large frame – worked like charm!
I hope ideas like this help your creative juices flow and give you hope and encouragement as you plan some VERY budget-friendly cute home decor ideas or sweet decorations to celebrate someone’s big day!

You have such beautiful handwriting! Any tips for those of us who don’t?

I love this question. I always look at examples when I’m not sure how I want to style something and then I practice like crazy! If you’re wanting to write a long message in pretty handwriting the process is a little more tedious, but if you’re wanting something simple and common such as “Thank you,” “Welcome,” “Howdy,” or maybe something seasonal, I would look up signs on Pinterest that have that wording and try to mimic some of the pretty handwriting you would find on signs or printables and use them as an example to try to form your own pretty handwriting style! There are lots of people who have much more beautiful lettering talents than I have, but I was totally one of those little girls who practiced my handwriting all the time. I know, surprise! 🙂
